As a Writer and Director, he led The Sydney Theatre Company (STC) for eight years, first as co-Artistic Director from 2008 to 2012 alongside Cate Blanchett, then as sole Artistic Director from 2013 to 2015. This included works by Maxim Gorky (Philistines and Children of the Sun) and Mikhail Bulgakov’s The White Guard.
Passionate advocates for sustainability, Upton and Blanchett initiated the transformation of STC’s home into a sustainability hub, featuring Australia’s second-largest rooftop solar array, and the award-winning Greening the Wharf program. Their commitment to access and education extended to co-developing in-school professional learning programs. Since leaving STC he has returned to the company as a freelance writer with adaptations of Chekhov’s Three Sisters (2017) and The Seagull (2024).
